What can I expect on my first visit?
After completing a comprehensive intake form, Dr Gates will take you back to a private consultation and treatment room where she will speak with you about your specific problem and take an in depth medical history. If she feels she can help you and you are a good canidate for conservative care, she will perform a thorough examination. If you are selected to come under care, the subsequent visits are usually less than a half-hour.
I’ve never had a chiropractic adjustment. What can I expect?
Virtually all chiropractors use the “adjustment”, also called spinal manipulation, to correct mechanical problems in the spine. There are a variety of methods to manipulate the spine but most involve a short “thrust” to the area of concern to restore mobility and function and bring relief. We use non-force and low-force adjusting techniques.
Does Dr. Gates require X-rays to treat me?
No, not every patient needs x-rays. This is decided on a case to case basis, based on the individual. If x-rays are needed, you will be refered to the UVA Imaging Center.
How often do I need to see the Doctor for an adjustment?
It is difficult to predict, each case depends on the individual. Each patient will sit down with Dr. Gates to discuss a treatment plan and goals. We try to give you the information and tools you need to make the best decision possible about your health.
Other Chiropractors have told me once I start chiropractic treatment, I need to continue it for the rest of my life. Is this true?
Much like a car needs tune-ups, your body may require periodic chiropractic adjustments to keep your spine aligned and pain-free. Each person’s history, daily practices and inherited physical traits are different, so your health needs will vary accordingly. Some people get an adjustment every 4 weeks, while others only come to see Dr. Gates 4 times a year.
Is chiropractic and acupuncture covered by Insurance?
That really depends on your individual insurance plan. Every insurance plan is different. At Body Equilibrium, we try to work with your insurance company. We file with your insurance as a courtesy to you. Your coverage and benefits are between you and your insurance company. If you do not have health insurance coverage, Dr. Gates’ staff will make every effort to work out a payment plan that is affordable. We strive to ensure there are no financial barriers to your care so that you can receive the treatment your body needs to get well faster and work better.
